After our weekend trip to Chiloe it was difficult to get up this morning and go into work, especially since today's weather was the nicest we've had so far (as you can see from my daily cruise ship picture). This morning Gayathri, Evan, and I sat in on a Canales staff meeting. The meeting was in Spanish. Our translator summarized the discussion for us. Even with the built in inefficiencies of translation the meeting was fairly informative. After the staff meeting we meet with Andrea (who spoke English). Prior to the change in presidents last week, Andrea worked with the Ministry of Labor. She provided us with a good perspective of the Puerto Montt workforce as well pointing us to potential sources of additional information. After that we met with Pedro to go over the format that Canales uses to store data collected from local schools. Pedro only spoke Spanish. Once again we had to call on our translator to help us. The technical nature of the topic made translating more difficult that normal. The rest of the work day was spent reading documents.
One of the Chile 5 team members, Dee, is from Ireland. At breakfast we was kind enough to give us all a St. Patrick's day pins to wear. Mine said Irish for a day. At 8:00 PM she arranged a little celebration for us on the second floor lobby.
