Generally when I go on a week long business trip I start packing for my return on Wednesday evening, roughly half way into the trip. Today is my virtual Wednesday. I've taken enough cloths that today I started packing away the things I will not need for the rest of the trip. The suitcase is still fairly empty at the moment, but if all goes as planned I'll slowly pack something away every night over the next two weeks.
This morning started out with me accompanying Evan to the airport to return the rental car. We had to return it to the airport because the rental booth downtown was closed. Returning the car was undoubtedly the most dangerous thing anybody did this weekend, but we eventually managed to get there and back safely.
The home page of my blog web site has some awesome pictures of Puerto Montt with the Osorno volcano in the background. For the last two weeks I've been convinced that the volcano was photo-shopped in. I've looked for the volcano everyday at lunch time and could not see it. Today after lunch a few of us took a boat tour around a small island in the bay. Once we started to sail towards the island I finally verified that the photos are authenticate. The further away we got from the shore the more apparent it became that the volcanoes really do dominate the city's landscape. If you look carefully at the last volcano picture below you'll see 3 volcanoes (Osorno on the left, Calbuco on the right and one I do not know the name of in-between).
Arranging the boat tour was an experience. Colin and I thought we had seen a place for boat tours when we walked up to the fish market on Day 2, but today there was no obvious signs for a boat tour. As we walked back towards the hotel a woman was asking us (in Spanish) if we were looking for a place to eat. After we politely said no, Colin tried to ask her about boat tours (in English). There seemed to be a rather tour like boat arriving at a dock 100 meters or so down from us, but the woman waved her arms at us indicating it was not a tour boat and motioned us to follow her. We followed her to a small boat where Colin negotiated a price for a tour. I expected she was going to have somebody come to give us the tour, but once we got into the boat she jumped in and started rowing out far enough to start the engine and off we went. I'm still not convinced that the bigger boat was not really a tour boat.
