This morning Evan, Gayathri, and I accompanied Claudia on a visit to a local school. Claudia is a technical coordinator at Canales whose focus is Aquaculture. Her role is to facilitate relationships between the schools and industry. We were accompanied by Bernadette, our translator. The meeting was in Hornopiren. Our purpose in accompanying Claudia was to observe a typical school engagement.
Hornopiren is about 66 miles to the southeast of Puerto Montt. To get to Hornopiren we headed down route 7 which is a winding coastal road. At Caleta La Arena we needed to take a ferry to Caleta Puelche. Our timing was such that we did not make the first ferry to arrive. Only 1 ferry appeared to running today. We had to wait 45 minutes for the ferry to return. At some point between Caleta Puelche and Hornopiren the road transitioned from a paved road to a dirt road. We arrived at Hornopiren nearly 5 hours after departing Puerto Montt. While at Hornopiren we observed the meeting between Claudia and the school representatives. Afterwards we were given a tour of the school.
While the drive from Puerto Montt was very scenic, it did point out the logistical challenges that the local schools face when trying to form connections with the Puerto Montt's industries.
